The Lockjaw Tarpon Fishing Release Gaff  ®

The Lockjaw Gaff ® is a tarpon fishing release gaff that is the cumulative effort of two longtime professional fishermen who put their minds together in solving the age old nemesis of tarpon fishing: how to prevent giant tarpon from escaping at boat side without harming or killing them.

Capt. Robert McCue has over two decades of professional tarpon fishing experience. He has shattered 8 IGFA World Records and has won nearly $250,000 in tarpon tournaments. Capt Bob Earl earned his salt through a lifetime of chasing  giant blue fin tuna along the North Carolina coast of the North Atlantic. In addition to Bob’s prowess to giant blue fin tuna fishing, he is a master machinist and fabricator. After 3 years of relentless design, research and testing, the final version of this unprecedented effort and cost, is now unveiled. We introduce to you,  The Lockjaw Gaff ® .

More tournament money has been lost by tarpon jumping off a gaff than there has ever been won. In fact, more tarpon are lost at the side of the boat than at any other point in battle with the silver king. The high risk of losing a tarpon has led to some questionable practices in handling the fish by both the recreational and professional angler and has likely contributed to the unintentional mortality of releasing giant tarpon. By using The Lockjaw Gaff ® there is no longer a need to “jam” your arm or a rope up through the gills. There is no need to wrestle with a thrashing fish while trying to grab its lower jaw only to drop it  in an attempt to subdue it. The "grip of death" around the fish's isthmus (throat) is now primitive barbarism.

Now with one easy stroke of your hand and The Lockjaw Gaff ®, you can safely and POSITIVELY land giant tarpon without injuring or killing them (or potentially yourself).

The Lockjaw Tarpon Fishing Release Gaff’s ® posi-locking latch will prevent the fish from coming off the gaff until you are ready to release it. No more violent thrashing and head shaking while trying to pin the tarpon with a conventional lip gaff under your boat’s rubrail.

With an attached line, The Lockjaw Gaff ®can be released from your hands and the fish is free to jump and thrash as it pleases out of harm’s way. This professional "trick" is similar in theory to how a flying gaff  is designed to not rip from a fish. Furthermore it reduces the chances of the gaff man injuring himself or mortally wounding the tarpon.

Capt. Robert McCue led the state of Florida in the number of tarpon he genetically tagged and released in 2005 and 2006. In those same years, he was the only fishing guide to acoustically tag and release tarpon in the State of Florida’s catch-and-release mortality project in both Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor estuaries. He successfully used The Lockjaw Gaff ® in both studies and his acoustically tagged tarpon were tracked for up to 3 weeks after release. McCue has also used The Lockjaw Gaff ® for science to “tow” live, acoustically tagged, and released tarpon back to the school of fish.  The Lockjaw Gaff 's ® crown jewel is how the gaff has performed  in competitive tournaments (including The Professional Tarpon Tournament Series [PTTS] ) by bringing several placing tarpon back to the  scale where they were weighed and successfully released alive.

Capt. Bob Earl is a perfectionist and a master of his machining craftsmanship. Bob uses computers and CAD software to cut and bend his metal to the tightest of engineering tolerances. He uses only the highest grade of 316 stainless steel and polishes the metal to an unparalleled “knight of armor” grade and shine. The latch is machined through several lengthy steps from the highest-grade marine aluminum alloy available. Corrosion resistance to the aluminum latch is insured through black anodizing. The spring mechanism has a double fail safe with a redundant high-grade stainless steel spring encapsulated in the interior of the primary spring. The latch's precision design and the tightest tolerances ensure that if there is any type of mechanical failure with the springs, the latch cannot back open in a manner that would result in a premature release.

Whether you fish tarpon in Tampa Bay, Homosassa, Boca Grande, Charlotte Harbor, the Florida Keys, or Costa Rica, The Lockjaw Gaff ® is the last tarpon release gaff you will ever own!
