There are, nor were there ever, any shortcuts in the design, research and/or production of The Lockjaw Gaff ® . The gaff is designed as a "lifetime tool".  However, like any other product used in the marine environment, the gaff does require simple and periodic maintenance.

The gaff is composed of two antagonistic alloys, 316 stainless steel and aircraft grade aluminum.  Combined with conductive saltwater, the formula for galvanic corrosion is complete. Corrosion between the two materials will occur around the gaff's lowest area of resistance on the galvanic scale. Relative to my gaff, this is the spring mechanism area.

For sportsman who rinse their equipment each day with fresh water and a periodic spraying of a corrosion inhibitor ( in the Unites States Marine Corps, I trusted my life with  Corrosion Block  ), the gaff will flawlessly perform  for a lifetime . Keeping the spring area lubricated  with  Corrosion Block's grease is recommended as well, but not necessary.

Over the past couple of years, I  have seen the spring mechanism area in unbelievable states of galvanic corrosion by those who stow the gaff in areas such as a wet hatch or even the bilge without a single cleaning. On the water I have be4en sucessful in freeing the over-built spring/spring arm to near new condition with provisions such as bottled water, sunscreen, Coca  Cola and/or virtually any other liquid substance. For adverse states of being and in a more controlled environment, I use Break-Free CLP, the same solvent I trusted my firearms with while serving in the United States Marine Corps.

With simple and traditional maintenance of near all marine equipment, The Lockjaw Gaff ® will last a life time.
